Social Responsibility is an ideology that states that the individual or group has an obligation to act in a manner that benefits and is in the best interest of society as a whole. Theatre and Social Responsibility refer to theatre artists, playwrights in the case of this class, operating within the belief system that art is created for social change, and to inform the public with regards to human rights issues, and issues of freedom, inequality, and society's oppression of an individual or group.  The group that this course will focus on is African Americans.  The goal of the course is to use theatre to tell the history of African Americans, highlighting important African American leaders, and historical movements, and time periods that empowered African Americans.  Course materials will cover the Black Power era, the Black Arts Movement, the Black Panthers, and the everyday lives of 20th century African Americans.  We will also review the work of Chicano playwright Luis Valdez and several playwrights of color.
